Baptism is a response to God’s love. The baptism service is an outer expression of an inward commitment to follow Jesus, an important step of faith, and a special celebration.
For children
Baptism services
Everyone is welcome to have their baby or child baptised in their parish church. Baptism (often called a christening) marks the beginning of a journey with God, a journey that continues for the rest of our lives.
This first step is a response to God’s love, when parents and godparents promise to help bring up the child in the Christian faith.
It is also a celebration, a time to come together with family and friends to remember your child is loved by God, is part of a wider community, and is welcomed into the family of the church.

Thanksgiving services
You might want to celebrate the gift of your child in a different way, without the commitment that baptism involves. In this case, you may prefer to have a thanksgiving service instead.
During a thanksgiving service, parents and families give thanks for the life of a child and everyone prays for the child and his or her family. There are no promises to make about the Christian faith.
Your child will be blessed and prayed for, and supporting friends will promise to support the parents in bringing up their baby or child.

For adults and young people
Baptism services
Adults and young people are also welcome to be baptised at St Saviour’s. Baptism is a very special moment in our journey of faith, at whatever age or stage of life. It is an outer sign of a person’s inward commitment, a symbolic declaration in front of family, friends and church, that you are ready to follow Jesus. The baptism service is similar to the service for a child’s baptism except that, because you are making the decision and promises for yourself, there is no role for godparents.
You may be at the start of your faith journey, or you may have been coming to church for a while and want to make a more definite commitment to your Christian faith, or you may be preparing for confirmation and need to be baptised first. Whatever your reasons, if you are thinking of getting baptised, we would love to hear from you. We can go through things with you to make arrangements and help you to prepare for this exciting step.
You can find out information about being baptised on the Church of England’s website.
